Distinguished and Famous people from Port Melbourne

🎨 Wilbraham Liardet

Wilbraham Liardet arrived with his family in 1839 intending to settle in Sydney, but a stop in Hobsons Bay changed the plan. At what became Port Melbourne he carried mail ashore, ran transport into town and opened the Brighton Pier Hotel. Commercial success proved elusive, and insolvency followed, but he also organised regattas, archery and other entertainments. His watercolours preserve buildings and waterfront scenes from Melbourne’s early colonial decades. The pictures outlasted many of the businesses: an energetic hotelkeeper and transport operator also left an unusually valuable visual record of the city taking shape around him.
